From the Heart of Chicago to the Beats of Amsterdam: Mearzie’s Journey Through Sound

At the Technique Space inside the Nexus Lounge, DJ Ron of Nexus Radio sat down with rising DJ and producer Meanie, better known by her stage name Mearzie. What began as a lighthearted moment—Ron proudly getting her DJ name pronounced correctly—quickly unfolded into a thoughtful and inspiring look at one of the scene’s most promising new voices.

For Mearzie, who recently moved from Chicago to Washington, DC, Amsterdam brought a flood of familiarity. When asked to describe the city in one word, she laughed and replied, “Chicago overseas.” The comparison revealed more than geographic humor; it pointed to the sense of belonging she carries with her, no matter the city.

As the conversation moved into her craft, Mearzie reflected on how drastically DJing has evolved. Having started live gigs in 2021, she has embraced modern tools wholeheartedly. “The ability to see the wavelength is very important,” she explained, crediting digital technology for allowing her to visualize and build her sound more intuitively. She’s also no stranger to experimentation—learning from a wide mix of equipment, new and old, functional or broken.

Her musical influences stretch back to her youth, shaped by pop powerhouses like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. But despite early inspirations, her path has not been without challenges. Coming up in a male-dominated industry, her experience as a promoter in Chicago equipped her with confidence and resilience—skills she now brings into shaping her emerging footprint in DC’s music scene.

The real struggle, she admits, is balance. Managing a full-time job while producing music demands discipline, patience, and constant exposure to new sounds. “It’s tough,” she said, acknowledging that creativity can falter under pressure. But by listening widely and practicing often, she keeps her artistic spark alive.

One of the most fascinating moments in the interview came when Ron asked what song she would play for aliens. Her pick? “Journey to Sagittarius, ACE Star.” The track reflects her cosmic imagination—a theme echoed across her recent releases, many of which draw inspiration from space, mysticism, and exploration.

Looking forward, Mearzie’s ambitions are woven with purpose and excitement. She dreams of performing in new places, energized by the thrill of seeing a crowd dance in harmony. It’s a feeling that confirms why she pursued music in the first place—because it brings people together in ways words can’t.

Her love for trance and melodic soundscapes shines through her style today, influenced by artists such as Armin van Buuren and Above & Beyond. Her journey is shaped equally by the pulse of Chicago’s nightlife, the creativity of DC’s underground, and the forward-thinking energy she brings to every set.  Listen to the full interview below.
