DJ Encore’s ‘I See Right Through to You’ featuring Engelina is everything we loved about Eurodance. It is an interesting track, as while Eurodance was morphing into progressive house in the late 90s and early 2000s, ‘I See Right Through to You’ sticks firmly by the side of Eurodance.
At 140 BPM, ‘I See Right Through to You’ is energetic and incredibly danceable, with a driving beat and catchy trance synths. Engelina’s vocal performance is impressive, pulling us instantly into her words of those meaningless interactions with others at raves and in the club.
The collaboration between the Danish DJ Encore and the Danish Engelina was a key building block for both of their careers. For many, ‘I See Right Through to You’ was the first they heard of the two. It was released as the lead single in their significant debut album Intuition. Undoubtedly, the track’s popularity explains part of Intuition’s success, which reached number 7 in the Danish Albums Chart.
As well as becoming a stand-out track on Intuition, ‘I See Right Through to You’ had success in its own right. It charted well in Denmark, Germany, and the US Dance Club charts, reaching positions 1, 66, and 15 respectively.
Outside of Europe’s biggest clubs, ‘I See Right Through to You’ became a soundtrack to the winter for all Danes. It was selected as the theme for the immensely popular first season of Big Brother Denmark.
The success of ‘I See Right Through to You’ can be attributed to the work of its primary producer and mixer, Michael Parsberg aka ADF. Parsberg is one of the biggest names in Danish trance and house. His reputation as the genius behind successful Danish acts including Safri Duo, Barcode Brothers, and Pegboard Nerds made him a target for all Danish Eurodance artists. DJ Encore and Engelina would have been delighted to get him on board.
After such a successful track early in their careers, DJ Encore and Engelina’s paths went in similar directions. Both artists made music under their monikers for a short period of time before providing songwriting work for other artists.
DJ Encore’s most notable work after ‘I See Right Through to You’ and Intuition, was his 2nd Eurodance album Unique released in 2007. On Unique, DJ Encore stuck to what he did best, classic Eurodance driven by female vocals. He collaborated with the Swedish singer Johanna Elkesdotter, but well past the prime of Eurodance, DJ Encore was not able to reach the success of Intuition.
Engelina had a shorter career after ‘I See Right Through You’, mostly collaborating with DJ Encore on later tracks for the Intuition album. Engelina’s performing career ended in November 2002 with her performances on Sha Li Mar’s self-titled hip-hop and R&B album. Engelina’s songwriting career has proved much more expensive, and she has worked with the likes of Basshunter, Kylie Minogue, and Gary Barlow.
DJ Encore and Engelina both had fascinating careers, but their collaboration ‘I See Right Through You’ was undoubtedly the stand-out. Listen to Nexus Radio to hear classic tracks like it.
