THE TAKE 5 SERIES
Piri & Tommy unearthed their shared love of dance music through a playful DM slide and a melodic harmony explored in the abyss of a locked-down student dorm mid-pandemic. The catchy riff smash “soft spot” was born from that artistic chemistry – a track showcased as the theme song to over 100k TikTok videos, accumulated over 12 million Spotify streams, and cemented a place in the hearts of the likes of Charli XCX.
With that, it has given rise to more soft and feel-good alt-dance music tinged with 90s nostalgia, while their debut froge.mp3, dropped in October 2022, seems almost symbolic of the real-life couple’s charm that their fans have always adored.
In our latest interview with Piri, she mentioned 2023 is the year of collaborations for her. She is meeting many new people and creating music along the way. Earlier this year, the duo released their first piece of work for 2023 titled “updown,” now available on Polydor Records. A tongue-in-cheek wave of hyper pop, rave, and women empowerment, “updown” marks the beginning of a new chapter for two of British music’s most exciting new faces.
When asked what music means to her, Piri responded succinctly: “music is a universal vibes-based language, one of the only things that connects pretty much everyone. It’s a beautiful thing.”
Rest assured that the two are working on their first long-form project, so stay tuned for more from Piri & Tommy soon. While waiting, read the full interview to learn more about Piri, including the songs that make her emotional.
Q: Before we dig in, what's next for you?
2023 is the year of collaborations for me! Working with a lot of new people and just making as much music as I can
Q: What does music mean to you?
Music is a universal vibes-based language, one of the only things that connects pretty much everyone, it’s a beautiful thing
Q: Is there a song that makes you emotional?
Songs that remind me of my mum and dad make me emotional just because I always end up thinking that they’re not gonna be here one day, so wetsuit by the vaccines and real love by Mary J Blige
Q: How important are lyrics?
To be honest, I actually don’t think lyrics are important! Terrible lyrics can ruin a song and incredible lyrics can take a song to the next level, but I’m quite happy listening to Kpop for example where lyrics are in a language I don’t understand and you can just vibe with the melodies!!
Q: If you could travel back in time, which musical era would you visit?
I would go back to experience disco in the 1970s! Funky on another level

I don’t think I could say I had a role model, I was always just in my world
Q: What makes you feel unstoppable?
I feel unstoppable when I’m listening to a demo that I just wrote, that feeling is everything
Q: The pandemic has been bad for many people, but there is a silver lining in everything: How has the pandemic improved your life?
Honestly don’t think I would have a career without the pandemic so that’s a silver lining and a half lol! I met Tommy just before lockdown 2 in the UK and we just had so much time to make music and not worry about anything else
Q: How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop?
I’ve never had a tootsie roll pop but I’m gonna say 69
