DJ Earworm’s ’50 Shades of Pop’ Released Today

It’s no surprise that, after being released earlier today, DJ Earworm’s United State of Pop 2015 (50 Shades of Pop) has already cracked the top five on the real-time Billboard + Twitter 140 Chart.

DJ Earworm (real name Jordan Roseman) has been making mashups of the year’s biggest hits in pop since 2007, but this year he’s taking it up a notch. Instead of the usual 25 tunes, he’s taken the top 50 songs of the year to create one huge five minute mashup.

Prominent in the mix is Taylor Swift with four songs; The Weeknd with three; and Rihanna, Ed Sheerhan, and Justin Bieber with two each. This doesn’t mean that others don’t get their fair share – Adele’s “Hello” makes it on, despite the fact that it was released so recently, as well as Ellie Goulding, some Diplo collaborations, Demi Lovato, One Direction, and many others.

“I try to get a feel of what is in the zeitgeist,” DJ Earworm said to Billboard about his process. He uses the Billboard charts for song selections every year. “Music has been going through a softer phase than it was a few years ago so there’s that return of adult contemporary. That’s maybe represented by the Ellie Goulding track, it’s very lush and soft. And then there’s sort of retro, uptempo dance stuff, and that’s represented by The Weeknd track.”

About the diversity of different sorts of songs heating up the charts this year: “It’s a more eclectic mix than it was five years ago.”
