Armin van Buuren stepped away from the DJ booth and dramatically outside his comfort zone for a surprise appearance on the Dutch television program Make Up Your Mind.
The internationally renowned trance artist appeared in full drag as the show’s “Mystery Queen,” trading his familiar festival attire for an elaborate costume, makeup and heels. His transformation reportedly required approximately five hours of preparation before he took to the stage for a one-time performance.
Make Up Your Mind, broadcast in the Netherlands on RTL 4, invites well-known personalities to experience the artistry and self-expression of drag while a panel attempts to uncover the celebrity hidden beneath each transformation. Van Buuren’s identity was initially concealed, allowing the electronic music superstar to fully embrace the character before eventually revealing himself to the audience.
The unexpected appearance demonstrated a notably different kind of performance from an artist accustomed to commanding some of the world’s largest dance floors. Rather than relying on a massive festival production, van Buuren entered an unfamiliar creative space that required him to perform in costume and heels while exploring a form of expression he had never publicly attempted before.
