It’s the end of the year, which means that everyone is creating “Best of 2015” lists. But what about “Best of All Time” lists? Billboard has released a list of fifteen cities that they consider the greatest dance music cities, looking back through the decades to the beginning of dance music, to give both the historical influencers and the modern innovators their due. And at the very top of the list is Chicago, which, conveniently, is also Nexus Radio’s home base.
Billboard says of Chicago: “House music’s hometown gave the world trailblazing artists (Frankie Knuckles, Marshall Jefferson, Ron Hardy), legendary venues (The Warehouse, Power Plant, Muzic Box) and a genre that remains the backbone of modern dance music.”
“Chicago is the #1 dance music city of all time, according to Billboard, and we wouldn’t even try to dispute that,” Your EDM adds. “Home to legendary artists, legendary venues, and one of the birthplaces of house music, this city has left an indelible mark on the trajectory of dance music throughout the last 20 years.”
This, of course, does not discount all the other incredible dance cities. Detroit, Berlin, Ibiza, Las Vegas, and Amsterdam are all included, as well as many others:
15. Montreal
14. Paris
13. Buenos Aires
12. São Paulo
11. Barcelona
10. Miami
9. Los Angeles
8. Amsterdam
7. Las Vegas
6. London
5. New York City
4. Ibiza
3. Berlin
2. Detroit
1. Chicago

But as they say at the very beginning of their article, “Electronic dance music is a universal language that connects the globe, often without words, in a shared culture.” So even if Chicago is number 1, dance music is truly a global phenomenon.
