Fresh Finds: Grimes, James Blake, Nina Kraviz and more… – 8/01

Welcome to the inaugural edition of ‘Fresh Finds,’ where I’ll offer a weekly recap of the latest releases in the electronic music space. I hope this weekly round-up will act as a way to platform new and exciting artists in the scene and bring some light to new projects from already-established names. With that being said, last week saw tons of new releases that caught my attention—keep reading to discover these sweet tracks!

Grimes

It’s been a second since Canadian DJ Grimes shared any new work with the world, with her last significant project being the dystopian epic Miss Anthropocene, fittingly released just weeks before the global pandemic shutdowns in early 2020. And just when we thought we’d lost her to cyborgism and Muskian shenanigans, Grimes released “I Wanna Be Software”, a very fitting and glitchy ode to technology. Co-produced with fellow Canadian Illangelo (a.k.a. Carlo Montagnese), “I Wanna Be Software” is the first taste of the singer’s long-awaited album Book 1.

Swedish House Mafia

Fans of Swedish House Mafia last week rejoiced when the legendary group released Paradise Again: The Live Album, a 22-track collection of recordings from their eponymous global tour. The album features reworkings of well-love hits like ‘Don’t Worry Child’ and ‘Save World’, as well as reimaginings of tracks from the Paradise Again album.

Nina Kraviz

It’s been a busy summer for Nina Kraviz, who’s busy touring schedule has taken her across much of Europe and Asia. (I even had the chance to catch her recently at Serbia’s EXIT Festival, which you can read about here.) Amongst the many gigs, Nina found the time to release “Taxi Talk”, an intoxicating new single complete with two remixes by David Löhlein and Sterac Electronics.

Calvin Harris

The last we heard from Calvin Harris was when he released “Miracle” with vocals by the unstoppable Ellie Goulding. A few days ago, Calvin dropped his first single of the summer: “Desire”, this time featuring Sam Smith. The track is smooth and sizzling, full of energy and perfectly complimented by Sam’s vocals—it’s a no-brainer add to your summer playlist.

Pryda

Last week saw the release of a new mini-EP from Pryda, who hasn’t had any new releases since his pre-COVID singles “Elements”, “Stay With Me” and “Lillo”. This latest project, appropriately titled The Return/Of Me, is everything you need from a summer techno EP—high energy, brilliantly produced and complete with intoxicating synth melodies.

Sneakes

The Force of Habit Summer Sampler 2023 is a project in collaboration with Azhar Sistorms, De La Trinidad and Sneakes. Each has got a track on it that evokes that ineffable summer vibe, and while I’m here for all three, it was Sneakes’ “She’s a Freak” that really caught my attention. The track is light, mixed to perfection and full of groove.
