Fresh Finds: Pickle, Oliver Heldens, Shygirl and more… – 1/23

Fresh Finds is back and better than ever! In case you forgot amidst the hustle and bustle of the holidays, Fresh Finds is Nexus Radio’s weekly new music recap, where we share our favorite new album and track releases of the week. Now that we’re comfortably settled into 2024, it’s time to take a look at the best new music of the year (so far):

• Pickle - Disko Demon EP

Who is Pickle, and why should you be listening to his latest EP Disko Demon? Well, we can’t quite answer the first question, because Pickle is a DJ of the masked variety, but we’ll give the second question a go.

Pickle’s Disko Demon, released through Spinnin’ Records, is a confluence of hard techno, internet humor, and whimsy. It features excellent beats and delicious drops that align with Pickle’s incredible output so far.

Prior to the two-track Disko Demon EP, Pickle dropped a series of singles in 2023. One of the highlights was “Crank That, ” a techno reimagining of Soulja Boy’s iconic eponymous song, and which featured a pickle donning a snapback on its album art.

With Disko Demon, Pickle continues his charted course, providing listeners with unique samples and myriad reasons to dance.

• Oliver Heldens & Ian Asher – “Mas Que Nada”

For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere missing the heat and boundless possibilities of summer, “Mas Que Nada”, the collaboration between Oliver Heldens and Ian Asher, came at the perfect time. Sampling and reworking Sergio Mendes’ original 1966 track into a frenzy of jungle beats, house, and Brazilian funk, “Mas Que Nada” evokes all the joy of the warmer seasons, regardless of where you actually may be.

• ALOK, Bebe Rexha – “Deep In Your Love”

It’s always a good day when ALOK has something new to share with the world, and this time the excitement is two-fold with “Deep In Your Love”, featuring Bebe Rexha’s gorgeous vocals. A longtime favorite of DJs for her vocal versatility, Bebe here teamed up with Brazilian legend ALOK on a track that blends progressive techno and a classic EDM sound.

• AVAION X BUNT – “Other Side”

Hitmakers AVAION and BUNT team up on “Other Side, ” combining stutter house influences and euphoria-infused medleys into a track that bristles with electricity. Sparked by the pair’s pop-up party in a local convenience store in Hamburg, Germany, “Other Side” is as well composed as it is produced and a clear indicator of the duo’s unbeatable musical chemistry.

• Shygirl, Boys Noize – “tell me”

Gearing up for the upcoming release of her EP ‘Club Shy’, Shygirl teams up with Boys Noize for this rave-infused track. Always featuring a certain element of chaos signature to this London-based artists’ sound, “tell me” draws from various influences, including Boys Noize signature electro/techno sound, and offers a softer side of Shygirl.
