Kendra Erika: Don’t Threaten Me With A Good Time

Kendra Erika Interview.

South Florida-based singer songwriter Kendra Erika first broke into the scene with her song “Oasis” in 2016. The success of her single “Self Control” and her work with GLBTQ youth in South Florida has accelerated her demand both in the Gay Club World and the Dance Radio world.

We sat down with Kendra after her live performance at Hydrate Nightclub in Chicago to ask about her latest single. Specifically, what inspired her to cover of the 1984 classic “Self Control” by Laura Branigan.

“I’ve always had a special place in my heart for that song. From the first time I heard it, I really fell in love with it. And it spoke to me in such a way that every single inch of my body just wanted me to take it to a new level; like new age and new spin on it. Just performing the original Laura Branigan version and now performing mine is surreal! And I’m just loving the process and the feedback that I’m getting because of it.”

Chicago Is Lit.

With so many Chicago based remixers on the record like Ralphi Rosario and Dirty Work, we couldn’t help asking what about Chicago she loved the most.

“I love the fact that it reminds me of Paris. It really does because, for one, it’s a very clean city. The people are so within their creative sense, you know. You just get this a well-balanced sort of vibe from everyone here. We were having this conversation last night (about Chicago) and that it’s always lit… it’s such a well-lit city.”

Speaking of hometowns or home cities/states, we wanted to get Kendra’s take on the scene in South Florida, where she is from.

“Florida definitely brings out the creature in everyone. I mean Florida, Miami especially, and the whole concept behind Florida is just to vacation really. So naturally when people go down there, they just want to let loose and they want to be the anarchists of their life.”

Don’t Threaten Her With A Good Time.

Kendra Erika posted a picture of herself on Instagram with 90’s pop star Mya, here’s the scoop.

“The funniest thing. My stylist Leon Frazier, who has styled a lot of my videos especially the latest one ‘sublime.’ So, he texted me ‘Miss Kendra, are you going to be in the Boca social scene tonight? I’m going to be with a client of mine Mya at a local venue called Wish’ And I was like, I don’t know. But I was like ‘don’t threaten me with a good time, of course, I’ll come down.’ So, we were all just hanging out, and Mya did a fantastic job, and she’s one to really look up to as far as like billboard [success].”
