Pet Shop Boys have announced A Man From the Future, a new album created in collaboration with acclaimed Alan Turing biographer Andrew Hodges. Set for release on October 9 via Parlophone Records, the eight-track project combines electronic music, string orchestration and spoken-word narration to explore the extraordinary life and lasting legacy of the pioneering British mathematician and cryptanalyst.
The album features music and lyrics written by Pet Shop Boys members Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, with actress Juliet Stevenson providing narration. The spoken passages are drawn from Hodges’ influential biography Alan Turing: The Enigma, with the text edited and expanded by Tennant and Hodges for the project.
Musically, A Man From the Future brings together Pet Shop Boys’ signature electronic sound with intimate orchestral arrangements by German composer Sven Helbig. The strings are performed by the Manchester Camerata Octet, while members of the Manchester Grammar School choir appear on four of the album’s tracks. Pet Shop Boys and Helbig jointly produced the record.
Across its eight tracks, the album follows Turing’s story chronologically, beginning with his school years and his early realization of his sexuality. It then traces his studies at Cambridge, his vital work during World War II and his leading role in breaking Germany’s Enigma code.
The project also examines Turing’s contributions to the creation of the digital computer and his remarkably early predictions surrounding artificial intelligence—ideas that have become increasingly relevant as AI continues to reshape technology, culture and society.
However, A Man From the Future does not avoid the devastating injustice that marked the final years of Turing’s life. In 1952, he was prosecuted and convicted for having a homosexual relationship, at a time when same-sex relationships between men remained illegal in Britain. He was subjected to hormonal treatment and died by suicide in 1954.
The closing track reflects on the recognition Turing received decades after his death. It incorporates part of former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s 2009 statement acknowledging Turing’s achievements and the appalling treatment he endured. The track then references the posthumous royal pardon granted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2013.
Although the album is newly announced, its origins stretch back more than a decade. Tennant and Lowe originally wrote the piece with Hodges between 2012 and 2013. It received its first major performance in July 2014, when Pet Shop Boys presented the work with the BBC Concert Orchestra and BBC Singers during a late-night BBC Prom at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
More than ten years later, the collaborators returned to the project and revised it for an official album release. The new version places greater emphasis on electronic production while maintaining the orchestral depth of the original composition. Helbig reworked his arrangements for a smaller eight-string ensemble, creating a more intimate musical setting, while Hodges updated the spoken narrative.
The result is a project that sits somewhere between an electronic album, an orchestral composition and a narrated historical work. It also brings together themes that have appeared throughout Pet Shop Boys’ career, including identity, British social history, political injustice and the relationship between people and technology.
Ahead of the album’s release, the BBC will present the world premiere of A Man From the Future on Sunday, October 4. BBC Radio 6 Music will air the piece during Stuart Maconie’s Freak Zone, broadcast from 8 to 10 p.m. BBC Radio 3 will follow with another presentation during Unclassified later that evening.
Pet Shop Boys and Hodges will also host a special listening and conversation event at the Imperial War Museum North in Manchester on Thursday, October 8. The event will offer audiences an opportunity to hear the work and learn more about its creation before the album arrives the following day.
