Deadmau5 Interview at Canadian Music Week, Releases New Single

Joel Zimmerman, better known as Deadmau5, released the single “Seeya” from his upcoming album while(1<2).  As he announces on his twitter: “oh hooray… ‘seeya’ was released on iTunes just now. neat! :D”  This follows on the heels of a video the artist posted on Youtube last Friday of an interview during Canadian Music Week in which he discussed his new album and the state of the EDM world today.

He believes that kids these days don’t necessarily put in all the hard work it takes to become a good DJ.  Zimmerman recalls having to work his way up in nightclubs, whereas aspiring EDM musicians now benefit from the luxury of internet how-tos and videos.  All they need to succeed is on the web.

While the internet assures that everyone has their chance to be heard, is it really a good thing for the EDM world?  Zimmerman does not think so.  These artists are going the “one-hit wonder” route because while production can be technically easy, it takes work to be a musician.  “As a part of this EDM world,” he says, “I’m now a frontman for this instant-gratification-production-buzz thing…” which is not what he wants to be associated with after spending years building up his reputation.

Deadmau5’s new album, which will be released in mid-June, will hopefully be an answer to this type of music production.
