Diplo Reveals Rihanna And Nicki Passed on ‘Lean On’

Major Lazer’s hit “Lean On” from their third album “Peace Is the Mission” is their most commercially successful single to date, according to the BBC. “It charted at number 2 in the UK, number 4 in the States and number 1 in many other countries.” But it was almost very, very different.

The song, written by Diplo and Danish singer-songwriter MØ as a slow reggae track, was originally meant for either Rihanna or Nicki Minaj, but both superstars said no. Perhaps they regret their answer now, but Diplo certainly doesn’t.

He said in an interview with TIME Magazine that it was “a blessing in disguise.”

“MØ sounds better than anybody was going to sound on that record,” he continued. “All we want to do is make the records feel like classics, even though they’re feeling progressive and strange to a normal ear.”
