The Chainsmokers hit the American Music Awards stage for the first time Sunday night, performing their hit song “Closer” with Halsey and special guest drummer Travis Barker of Blink-182. The performance featured a crew of backup dancers, dramatic neon light graphics and an array of fireworks.
Twenty-two-year-old singer-songwriter Halsey, also made her AMA performance debut. Halsey has seen a rapid two-year rise from unknown YouTuber to featured voice on one of 2016’s biggest songs.
2016 marks The Chainsmokers’ first AMA nomination, and they scored a total of four nominations, tying with Beyonce. They were nominated for New Artist of the Year Un-Leashed, Collaboration of the Year for ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ with Daya, Favorite Duo or Group and Favorite Artist – Electronic Dance Music (EDM).
Earlier in the evening, the duo were among the first to walk the AMA red carpet.
Other artists scheduled to perform are Justin Bieber, Niall Horan, Maroon 5 and Kendrick Lamar, James Bay, Fifth Harmony, Lady Gaga, Green Day, John Legend, Bruno Mars, Shawn Mendes, Twenty One Pilots, The Weeknd, special duets from Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj, and the American Music Award of Merit honoree and performer Sting.
