Amsterdam Dance Event Locks In Massive Program for 30th Anniversary Edition

Amsterdam Dance Event is officially putting the finishing touches on what is shaping up to be one of the biggest editions in its history. From October 21–25, ADE will celebrate its 30th anniversary by once again transforming Amsterdam into the center of the electronic music world, bringing together more than 3,600 artists for over 1,300 events spread across more than 300 venues throughout the city.

The latest additions only add to the scale of the week. Armand Van Helden, Boys Noize, Dax J, DJ Tennis, Djrum, Gerd Janson, GiGi FM, Grace Dahl, Hannah Laing, Jamie Jones, Len Faki, Mama Snake, Marie Montexier, Martin Garrix, Mau P, Marlon Hoffstadt, Pete Tong, SHERELLE, Speedy J, Surusinghe, Alex Kassian, Charlotte Adigéry, Chris Stussy b2b Job Jobse, Gizem Öz, Merve, Prozak, Saoirse and more have joined the program, filling out a lineup that reaches from underground club culture to some of dance music’s biggest names.

But ADE has never been just about what happens behind the decks. For its 30th year, the conference side of the event is leaning heavily into the conversations shaping the future of electronic music. Armin van Buuren will join Jean-Michel Jarre, Lady Starlight and JakoJako for Music & Machines: A Conversation Between Artists from Different Generations, bringing together distinctly different eras of electronic music to explore how technology continues to change the relationship between artists and the music they create.

Afrojack, Mau P, Octo Octa, DVS1, Max Cooper, HoneyLuv, Sofiya Nzau, Joseph Capriati, Reinier Zonneveld, Cruel Santino and DJ Scratch are also among the latest names joining ADE Pro. Meanwhile, the Insider Knowledge series will bring some of the industry’s most influential companies into the conversation, with Spotify, SoundCloud, YouTube Music, NVIDIA, Helix Records, Believe, Warner Music, Sony Music, Universal Music, Armada Music, Sziget and others represented across the conference.

ADE is also using its anniversary to ask bigger questions about why nightlife continues to matter. Why Humans Still Need Dancefloors? will bring together Eris Drew, Alice O’Grady and Club RAUM’s Sven Bijma for a conversation about the importance of shared physical spaces and the communities built around them. ADE and VibeLab will take that conversation even further with the Nighttime Culture Index, an initiative designed to examine and map the cultural vitality of nightlife across cities around the world.

At the center of the anniversary celebrations is the 30 YEARS ADE Icon Series, a collection of 30 events that connects the history of electronic music with the artists, institutions and ideas moving the culture forward. Jean-Michel Jarre will serve as ADE’s Guest of Honour, arriving in Amsterdam as he simultaneously celebrates the 50th anniversary of his landmark Oxygène. Jarre will appear at AFAS Live, participate in an exclusive ADE Pro keynote and make additional appearances throughout the week.

Some of the anniversary’s most interesting moments will happen well outside the traditional club environment. Boris Acket’s monumental EINDER installation will feature performances involving the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Elias Mazian, while Swan Lake Remixed for ADE will bring Dutch National Ballet and ISH Dance Collective together inside the Gashouder. It’s a fitting example of what ADE has increasingly become — not simply a dance music festival or industry conference, but a week where electronic music intersects with art, technology, performance and the wider culture of Amsterdam.

ADE will also take a look back at its own unlikely journey. The 30 Years of ADE conversation brings together Anna Knaup, Maria Jimenez, Richard Zijlma, Jan-Willem van de Ven and Gary Smith alongside moderator Dave Clarke to revisit how the event grew from approximately 300 professional delegates and three nighttime venues in 1996 into a global gathering that now takes over an entire city.

That citywide approach continues through ADE Arts & Culture. This year’s program moves electronic music into museums, churches, galleries and other unexpected spaces, with DISCO I’m Coming Out at Wereldmuseum Amsterdam, hybrid live performances from Slimfit at Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder and Thomas Azier presenting his new work PANORAMA at raam art space. Colin Benders and Othernode will also transform Fabrique des Lumières through a live audiovisual performance for Dome Concerts.

On Saturday, the Culture Hub returns to Felix Meritis with MC Culture at the heart of its programming. Rather than focusing solely on DJs and producers, the program turns attention toward the voices, storytellers, scenes and communities that have helped electronic music develop into a global culture.

Three decades after ADE first welcomed a few hundred industry professionals to Amsterdam, the numbers surrounding the event almost seem impossible by comparison. More than 3,600 artists, 1,300 events and 300 venues will now make up five days of music, meetings, art, technology and nightlife.

And perhaps that’s the biggest story behind ADE turning 30. The event has grown enormously, but its core idea remains remarkably familiar: bring the electronic music community together in Amsterdam, put artists and ideas in the same rooms, and see what happens next.

From October 21–25, the industry does it all over again — only this time, with 30 years of history behind it.
