Fresh Finds:  4/23

April is slowly wrapping up, and while many in the Americas were turning their eyes toward the eclipse last week, we’ve been busy keeping up with all the latest and hottest new dance releases.

With releases from heavy hitters like Peggy Gou, Skrillex, and Charli XCX hitting streaming services, it’s been a busy couple of weeks in the world of electronic music. So, without further ado, here are our favourite new tracks of the month so far:

• ALBUM: SONIKKU – Whirlwind of Malevolence

For Sonikku, the London-based artist whose sophomore album Whirlwind of Malevolence finally graced the ears of a growing and faithful fanbase earlier this month, it’s evident that partying is somewhat of an art form. With a growing body of work showcasing the artist’s proclivity for capturing in sound the undefinable “vibe” of a good party, Sonikku’s follow-up to his debut Joyful Death (2020) cements him as a significant voice in the world of queer dance music.

There’s so much to love about this album—from the strengths of its features, to its brazen banjieness, to the addictive beats that permeate every track in its 26-minute run time. And yet, I think the best way to enjoy Whirlwind of Malevolence is from above, looking into a world of queer revelry that’s yours for the taking if you just dive in.

• TRACK: Charli XCX – “Club Classics” / “B2B”

With her album ‘Brat’ set to drop in June, the anticipation for more Charli XCX has been building. Fresh from a viral Boiler Room set, the British pop princess unveiled two new tracks from her forthcoming album, offering a tantalizing glimpse into the sonic landscape of her new project. These tracks, reminiscent of her debut single ‘Von dutch’, deliver a much-needed dose of transgressive dance-pop, fueling our excitement for the recently announced Charli x Troye Sivan SWEAT tour, set to hit North America this fall.

• TRACK: Peggy Gou – “1 + 1 = 11”

Peggy Gou, a techno powerhouse who earned her stripes with last year’s unforgettable “It Goes Like (Na Na Na)”, has graced us with a long-awaited new single to herald the arrival of her debut album, I Hear You. While it may not have the immediate viral appeal of last summer’s hit, “1 +1 = 11” is a certified banger. And with a video from Olafur Eliasson, the Icelandic artist and a longtime friend of Peggy’s, it’s a visual and auditory treat that we can’t help but appreciate.

• TRACK: Carlita – “Time”

Here at Nexus Radio, we’re big Carlita fans—and with this latest, ethereal release from the Turkish-Italian DJ, we’re all the more in love. An already highly-anticipated single from fans who’ve heard this track live, “Time” is a lush and hypnotic addition to Carlita’s already excellent discography.

• TRACK: JOPLYN – “MOMENT”

Following up on her devastating and refreshing 2023 album SILVERLAKE 03, “MOMENT” is the latest from JOPLYN, the multi-hyphenate artist from Berlin, Germany. Genre-bending and driving, “MOMENT” is as dark as it is delicious. It dips into techno traditions without getting lost in them and ultimately serves as yet another reminder of JOPLYN’s talents.
