Fresh Finds: Patrick Holland, A.G. Cook, LF System and more – 2/27

There’s lots of new music to celebrate as we move out of February and into March (a.k.a. Miami Music Week Season). And that’s probably not a coincidence—as the world’s biggest DJs prepare for the biggest dance music event of the year, the urge to share a juicy new release ahead of show day is impossible to resist.

From remixes of viral tracks to incredible albums (that may have missed our radar earlier this year…), we’re excited to share the new music we’ve been listening to on repeat this week.

So, keep reading, and maybe you’ll discover a few new favorites along the way…

• ALBUM: Patrick Holland - Infra

What is it about Vancouver-born producer Patrick Holland’s newest album, Infra, that works so well? Released through Verdicchio Music Publishing, the record is a sort of compendium of Holland’s material dating as far back as 2017, spun together into a cohesive, tonal work that speaks to his strengths as a curator of synths, bass licks, and drum kicks.

Stylistically varied, though finding common ground through Holland’s evidently razor-sharp vision, Infra harkens back to the tracks that launched the now Montreal-based artist into the house-meets-indie zeitgeist during the mid-2010s (“Closer”, “Sky Lounge”).

There are several moments that made me pause and rewind—the bell-like synths of “S Mobile” and the drop following the soft crooning of an electric guitar in the opening track, “Third Rail”, come to mind—though the album is ultimately one of those you’ll want to listen to fully, savoring in the delicate tonal gradation, and readying yourself to play it again during the final hazy moments of “Off The Oil”, the record’s groovy closer.

Infra is an exciting new offering from an artist whose discography wasn’t lacking such an elegant album, but which is all the more elevated for it.

• TRACK: A.G. Cook – “Britpop”

PC Music label founder A.G. Cook shared his latest track, “Britpop”, following a preview during Charli XCX’s internet-breaking Brooklyn Boiler Room set last week. Featuring XCX and acting as the lead single off Cook’s upcoming album of the same name, “Britpop” is a wonderful medley of hyperpop synths and airy whistles that speak to the producer’s singular, razor-honed focus.

• TRACK: Durante feat. Nathan Nicholson – “Holding On”

“Holding On”, the third single from Durante’s upcoming debut album Enter, is a brooding house track whose center is an addictive bass line and the soothing vocals of The Boxer Rebellion’s Nathan Nicholson. If the three tastes of the album we’ve gotten so far are anything to go off of, Durante’s debut, slated for release April 5, promises to be one of the most exciting releases in dance this year.

• TRACK: LF SYSTEM – “All I’ve Got”

Marking their debut with Insomniac Records, LF System’s latest release brings the classic disco-house groove that we’ve come to expect from this Scottish duo. A reworking of house legends Byron Stingily and Lenny Fontana’s “I’ll Give You”, “All I’ve Got” is LF System doing what they do best.
