Fresh Finds: Romy, Kylie Minogue, Purple Disco Machine and more… – 9/12

Fresh Finds: Romy, Kylie Minogue, Purple Disco Machine and more… – 9/12

It’s Tuesday, which means that we’re almost halfway through the work week and—even more importantly—that we’re back with another edition of Fresh Finds.

If you’re looking for a way to sift through what can sometimes feel like an overwhelming number of new releases, look no further than Fresh Finds—Nexus Radio’s weekly recap of all the freshest singles and albums dropped by everyone from up-and-comers to industry legends.

Take a look at some of our favorite releases of the past week below:

• ALBUM: Armin Van Buren – A State of Trance: Ibiza 2023

If you haven’t heard yet, father-of-trance Armin Van Buren has spent the last week bringing his signature sound to the partygoers of Ibiza in yet another critically acclaimed summer residency. The Dutch DJ is a regular at the biggest clubs across this tropical paradise, and it’s clear that A State of Trance: Ibiza 2023 aims to bring the vibes to listeners around the globe. The two-hour mix features tracks from Ferry Corsten, D.O.D, and Kryder to name a few, as well as several tracks by the artist himself, including his latest single “Lose This Feeling”.

• ALBUM: Romy – Mid Air

You might know Romy as one of three industry shakers that made up The xx. The British indie rock band’s other two members—Oliver Sim and Jamie xx—have gone on to individually release critically lauded solo albums, and this week was Romy’s turn, with her debut solo album Mid Air. With features from Fred again… and Beverly Glenn-Copeland, Mid Air is a tightly produced and excellently paced debut that is equally a dissection of heartbreak as it is an invitation to the dancefloor. Some of my personal highlights include: “Twice”, “Enjoy Your Life” and “One Last Try”.

• Kylie Minogue – “Tension”

If “Padam” brought Kylie Minogue back to the forefront of the global zeitgeist, then “Tension”, the title track and latest single from Australian pop princess’ sixteenth studio album, has officially confirmed 2023 as being a comeback year for this legend. With production by Biffco and Duck Blackwell, “Tension” is packed with erotic imagery and titillating synths offering another exciting sneak of the Tension album ahead of it’s late-September release date.

• Karen Harding – “Wrong Places”

Released through Ultra Music, Karen Harding’s “Wrong Places” is a clever mix of 80s-era synths and contemporary beat drops that’s as intense as it is intoxicating. Karen’s debut album, Take Me Somewhere is slated for release September 29th—until then, I’ll keep “Wrong Places” playing on loop.

• Voost x Leo Wood – “Someone”

Co-created by Dutch DJ Voost and songwriter/vocalist Leo Wood, “Someone” is an exciting new dance track released through Spinnin’ Records. Well-executed as far as drops go, and with a flare for the anthemic, “Someone” should be an instant add to your dance playlists.

• Purple Disco Machine x Duke Dumont x Nothing But Thieves – “Something On My Mind”

It’s always a good week when Purple Disco Machine delivers a new track, and this week’s Duke Dumont and Nothing But Thieves co-production “Something On My Mind” more than delivers on that promise. Bridging the gap between PDM’s signature 70s-infused style and Nothing But Thieves’ rock sound, “Something On My Mind” might just be an instant classic.
