Mathame: Crafting Cinematic Techno from the Shadows of Mount Etna

Few electronic acts today blur the lines between music, cinema, and immersive storytelling quite like Mathame. Comprised of Italian brothers Matteo and Amedeo Giovanelli, Mathame has emerged as one of the most innovative forces in melodic techno, building a sonic universe that feels equally emotional, futuristic, and cinematic. From global festival stages to deeply immersive audiovisual performances, Mathame continues to push electronic music into bold new dimensions.

The roots of Mathame trace back to Sicily, where the brothers lived at the base of Mount Etna after forming the project in 2013. Surrounded by volcanic landscapes and isolation, the environment became a defining influence on their sound. That sense of mystery, emotion, and contrast can still be heard throughout their productions today. The duo’s music captures a feeling of vastness and introspection, blending melodic house, dub techno, and cinematic textures into something unmistakably their own.

Both members of Mathame bring unique artistic backgrounds that help shape their creative identity. Amedeo Giovanelli studied violin at conservatory level, grounding the duo in classical music traditions and orchestral emotion. Matteo Giovanelli pursued filmmaking and worked as a director, introducing a strong visual and narrative element into the project. Together, those influences allow Mathame to create performances that feel more like cinematic experiences than conventional DJ sets.

Over the years, Mathame has become internationally recognized for its stunning audiovisual productions. Their performances incorporate advanced visual design, futuristic concepts, and even AI programming to create immersive journeys for audiences around the world. Rather than simply playing music, Mathame crafts entire emotional landscapes where sound and visuals move together in perfect synchronization.

That artistic vision has taken Mathame to some of the world’s biggest stages, including Coachella, Tomorrowland, Ultra, and Sonus Festival. Along the way, the duo’s music has also earned the attention of globally respected artists such as Diplo, Adriatique, and ZHU, all of whom have contributed remixes to the expanding Mathame universe.

A major milestone arrived in 2023 with the release of Mathame’s debut album MEMO via Astralwerks. Developed over several years, the album explores themes of memory, emotion, identity, and transformation. Structured almost like a cinematic narrative, MEMO follows a hero’s journey-inspired arc that reflects the duo’s passion for storytelling as much as music itself. Each track unfolds like a scene within a larger emotional experience, reinforcing Mathame’s reputation for crafting deeply immersive art.

What makes Mathame stand out in today’s electronic landscape is its refusal to follow trends. Instead, the duo continues to create from a place of curiosity, emotion, and artistic freedom. Their music feels simultaneously intimate and massive, capable of moving festival crowds while still resonating on a deeply personal level.

As Mathame continues evolving its sound and visual identity, the project remains one of electronic music’s most fascinating creative forces. With cinematic ambition, technological innovation, and emotional storytelling at the core of everything they do, Mathame is redefining what modern techno can become.  Listen to the full interview below.
