Axwell has hinted at the possibility of legendary EDM super group, Swedish House Mafia, reuniting in the future.
Back in 2012, EDM threesome, Swedish House Mafia, broke hundreds of thousands of hearts by announcing that their “One Last Tour” would, indeed, be their last. It came as an utter surprise to their fans and detractors alike. With the commercial success of hit singles like “Don’t You Worry Child” and “Save The World”, there was no indication that musically, the group was anywhere near slowing down. These were the same three men who were named by Forbes as the 3rd highest-earning Electronic Act of that same year.
Steve Angelo and Sebastian Ingrosso first met as school children in Stockholm. They began making music after being inspired by Daft Punk’s “Homework,” and after adding Axwell down the road, the three BFFs seemed invincible. Unfortunately, groups stronger than theirs have fallen victim to the crippling animosity and resentment that can grow between bandmates. During their documentary, Leave the World Behind, Ingrosso blamed their deteriorating relationship within the band for the break-up, saying:
“A lot of things happened this year, and it makes you realize we are not best friends anymore. And that’s the truth,”
Meanwhile Angelo told Huffpost:
“I think we felt like it had become a very big machine. I think the pressure … It just wasn’t having fun anymore. It was this humongous monster. We felt like tired. Swedish House Mafia was never something planned, it was just like, we’re three guys, let’s do this and have fun and throw parties and have a blast. So we just thought, “You know what? Let’s end this.”
The rest is history. Sebastian and Axwell continued to work together as successful EDM duo Axwell^Ingrosso, while Angelo has continued to expand his baby, Size Records, which has represented names like Laidback Luke, Afrojack and Avicii. Despite the success of all three following SHM, it has still felt like a consolation prize that only masks the sting of the group’s abrupt departure.
Now Axwell has re-opened old wounds with a hopeful knife by implying that there is a chance of a reunion. Insomniac reports that when asked by Zane Lowe on his Beats 1 radio show if there was any possibility of a reunion, Axwell responded with “Of course.” He continued to explain that all of the producers are currently involved in other projects, but concluded with:
“Who knows what happens in the future, we might get a sudden urge to Swedish House Mafia it up again, you never know.”
Obviously, this isn’t a promise or anything definitive. Offhanded comments aren’t much to bet on. What is worth taking to heart is the fact that at least one of the former bandmates is open to working together again. Maybe hurt feelings can be left behind and we can look forward to some great music ahead. Finger crossed.
