The video begins with the opening titles reminiscent to that of an old 1920’s film. The catchy hook of the bass starts to play and we are introduced to the setting: a black and white traveling circus. Lead singer, Chris Martin, plays both protagonist and antagonist in this short story about a lovesick magician’s assistant with eyes only for the young and beautiful magicienne he works for. And just like the title of the song, the video proves that illusions are only tricks, and that real magic is accomplished through love. Or in Chris Martin’s case, is accomplished through the defeat of his sweetheart’s drunk and comically moustached husband (who is also played by him). It’s both refreshing to the eyes and touching to the heart.
