We spoke live via remote at the Nexus Radio Lounge, hosted by the WIT Hotel in Chicago. He talked to us about his new coffee brand, the role of virtual events, the inspiration for his latest Disco House track “Dare Me”, and participated in our Take-5 Series
Plastik Funk ist ein spanish–born electronic music producer. Now based in Germany, he’s best known for his collaboration with Tujamo and Sneakbo: “Doctor Who?”
Plastic Funk just wrapped up a smashing Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) and is overjoyed with how the promoters were able to pull it off, despite the COVID-19 chaos.
Plastik Funk has been loving how virtual events have allowed him to release music and interact with fans through the pandemic. But just like us, he is eager to be back in the real world again. He wants to go back to as many live shows and interviews as possible.
We also asked Plastik Funk about his recent “Dare Me” track, which was a substantial shift away from his usual style.
"You know how it is; once in a while, you try to create something new. I've always been a big fan of disco houses. It was big twelve years ago, and I wanted to do something new. I spoke to NERVO at a festival about disco and doing something different… I was like, let's not do a mashup kind of remake. Let's do a completely new song out of it… It took us a couple of days, and the song was ready."
Plastik Funk teased us with what kind of music he was making. He mentioned that he has talked to record labels to try and make himself more relevant post–pandemic. He views this as an opportunity to push forward with his signature sound, releasing tracks on the Hexagon label.
When a producer makes a radio tune, then lyrics are everything. As part of our Take-5 series, we talked to the producer on what he believes makes a smashing record. He believes that it’s just 50% talent and hard work and the rest is just luck. He believes songs should aim at their intended audience. If a producer makes a radio track, then lyrics are everything. If they make a club track, then not so much.
As we discussed the past, we asked him what he wishes he had spent more time on back then now that we’ve had the pandemic. He told us that he wishes he had taken more time to breathe and take in the scene. After playing 195 shows in 2019, he realizes he would have got more out of it had he taken some time off.
A little further irony showed up when we asked Plastik Funk what the most absurd way he ever got hurt. He told us it happened in Amsterdam where he got run over by a bike. So he thought it was ironic that he survived the pandemic but then nearly got killed by the most ordinary thing on this planet.
