Cheat Codes, the wildly successful American DJ trio, consists of Kevin Ford, Trevor Dahl, and Matthew Russell. The Los Angeles-based group has combined their tastes into an electronic trifecta; poppy, radio-ready bangers will have you dancing the night away. The group debuted in 2015 with their single “Visions,” followed by a slew of singles. Cheat Codes took that momentum with them opening for The Chainsmokers on tour, solidifying a permanent spot in the dance genre. In 2016, they dropped “Sex” featuring Kris Kross Amsterdam and “Let Me Hold Onto You (Turn Me On) with Dante Kelin. Both singles became global successes. Then, on ” No Promises, “they released their biggest collaboration, Disney turned pop sensation Demi Lovato, on “No Promises.
For a successful group like Cheat Codes, their routine for preparing for sets isn’t very complex. They relayed that a significant factor in determining their set is simply the type of gig they are playing and the vibe they wish to create. They will usually begin and end with certain tracks, but other than that, it’s all about creativity and gauging the crowd’s energy.
When asked what the group is currently focusing on, it sounds like there are a lot of collaborations on the way, including several with country artists. “Since we started, we’ve always loved the idea of being able to like work with different types of musicians and different genres.” Cheat Codes are not afraid to experiment and find new ways to push the boundaries in their genre. So, what makes a successful record for an artist as big as Cheat Codes? “A lot of times, it’s a gut thing. Whenever we’ve released something that’s done well, you feel it before you release it,” And not every track has to be a hit. As long as they’re passionate about it, the trio isn’t afraid to release something that doesn’t fit in the Top 40 category.
After several years of growth in their careers, the group has learned a lot of lessons, one of those being that time flies by
"You are the pilot. So make sure you land that with grace."
