From TikTok Star To Self-Taught Producer: Cartfish Shares His Musical Journey

Joining us at the Level Awards space, in the Nexus Lounge, Miami edition, we spoke with Cartfish about his journey from part-time TikToker to full-time artist, what it’s like to be a self-taught producer, and the upcoming projects he and his fiance have planned.

An up-and-coming artist with a serious future ahead of him, Cartfish – known to his friends and family as Carter George Timothy Michael – isn’t the type to let the grass grow under his feet. From his work at the Wired Sound Academy, where he is currently enrolled, to his independent DJing/mixing, all alongside producing music with his fiance, it’s clear that new to the industry or not, Catfish is putting in the legwork to make a musical name for himself. Even better, it seems like all that hard work is finally starting to pay off.

After blowing up on TikTok and Instagram with fun, comedic videos, the couple decided to make the big leap into music. Carter dived into the production/mixing/DJing side of things while Alex—who once tried out for American Idol—took on the role of a singer.

"It's all self-taught - the production side of things. I'm enjoying it, but I'm borderline obsessed, and it's taking up a lot of my time."

Working in Ableton—an industry-standard production software that Carter describes as’ a beast’—he recently released his first single, “Serendipity,” which has already garnered him an incredible reaction. Meanwhile, the couple are working on joint projects and are hoping to release some full tracks soon—assuming their wedding in sunny Puerto Rico doesn’t take too much time out of their busy schedules, that is!

In terms of style, Carter says he’s inspired by artists like Rufus DeSole, Bob Moses, and Crooked Colours – an Australian group whose alternative melodic techno has garnered them a cult following.

Outside of music, Carter is a passionate surfer who’s always loved the ocean. He grew up in Bethany Beach, Delaware, before attending college in Jacksonville, Florida, at the University of Florida. He says he’s spent his whole life living by the sea, a trend he continues to this day as he now lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
