Crystal Waters stopped by for a chat at the Moooi pop-up studio during the Nexus Lounge Amsterdam. She talks of the hectic excitement of ADE, Black Girls Rock! Awards 2019, and takes part in our Take-5 series.
Crystal Waters is an American dance music singer and song writer with a musical career that can be traced back as early as 1989. She is best known for her work in the 90s, with hit singles “Gypsy Woman” and “100% Pure Love.” More recently, she released “Party People” earlier this year, a collaboration with DJ Spen and DJ Micfreak.
With decades of experience in the industry, Crystal Waters is one of the figureheads for the generation credited with introducing the world to House music. Looking back, she says, “I don’t think at the time we realized that we were kind of the pioneers of it. [Gypsy Woman] was one of the first commercial House records on the radio. It’s nice to look back and be proud of what we’ve done … I think ‘Gypsy’ has a life of her own and she’s just gonna keep going long after I’m gone.”
Everyone can take a lesson from the seasoned artist: when asked what the best cure for a hangover is, she answered “greasy foods.” If she could one of Disney’s soundtracks, it would be the one for Snow White.
Crystal Waters also sheds light on her latest projects, including an upcoming single with American DJ Hifi Sean titled “Heavy,” as the song reflects on how the current state of the world weighs heavily on the singer’s mind. Her single “United in Dance” with R-Naldo peaked at #2 on the Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart. She plans to release music with IAH Records, her very own record label which stands for “I Am House.” The label’s motto is “Where House Music Lives,” an accurate statement when you’re listening to Crystal Waters.
