Goldfish stopped by the Moooi pop-up studio during the Nexus Lounge Amsterdam for a chat on their latest projects, ADE experience, and to take part in our take 5 series.
Goldfish is a South African DJ duo based in Cape Town, and consists of Dominic Peters and David Poole. They were named “Best Pop” at the MTV Africa Music Awards 2014 and made their debut in 2006 with freshman album Caught in the Loop.
Their latest projects included a collaboration with French DJ Klingande, a single titled “Simple Man” and a live set at Red Rocks Amphitheater which they uploaded in full onto their YouTube channel.
The pair first met while studying music in college and it is clear that they have built a strong working relationship since then, while interviewing the two musicians, their answers were almost always unanimous.
When asked which unconventional artist they would collaborate with, they choose Seth Troxler, an American DJ. “When I think unconventional, I think Seth Troxler. Just the sheer shock factor of the three of us getting into a room together would be quite fascinating,” Dominic Peters says.
The musical duo is uncannily honest. When asked what their guilty pleasure TV show was, David answers with Golden Girls!
Whether it was the ADE fervor or just their cheerful approach to life, their spirits were refreshingly high and comedic throughout the interview. When asked the best cure for a hangover, they cheekily answered, “Beer… and then more beer.” Asking which Disney movie they’d make a soundtrack for prompted Dominic to sing his own little rendition of “Under the sea” from The Little Mermaid.
Asking which superpower they’d choose from a select few surprisingly prompted a philosophical response: “Hearing thoughts would just ruin the great mystery of life. Half of it is not knowing what everyone is really thinking, it’s just what makes thing interesting.”
