Justin Bieber has released his highly-anticipated fourth studio album, Purpose.
The track listings and features alone reveal how much different this is than Bieber’s past albums. This album has a heavy-handed use of EDM and includes multiple songs that either feature or are produced by new best bud, Skrillex. It includes the chart-topping Jack U track “Where Are You Now”and the emotional single “Sorry”. He features the talented and lovely newcomer, Halsey, on his track “The Feeling”. Her raspy, quiver contrasts with his syrupy tenor. Together they make a nice duo and put out a quality track. “Purpose” is a pop star’s ballad, pretty and melancholy. Having Big Sean and Travis Scott on “No Pressure” and “No Sense” respectively, managed to help break up the monotony, but avoid “Children”.
The album is solid. It’s a more grown-up sound for Bieber. This is one of the first projects where you can see he had to dive into himself to pull out. Justin sounds like less of a d-bag and more like an introspective, sad Justin that you could see wearing non-prescription glasses and playing an electric keyboard at a coffee-house chain. The album is, for the most part, hurt feelings. He went to a more vulnerable place than he’s ever spent an entire album on before, and it pays off. Quality songwriting and talented production make this album worth checking out.
