Joining us in the Bowers and Wilkins pop-up studio in the Nexus Lounge, Amsterdam, we sat down with DJ Steve Holsten to chat about his current and upcoming projects.
Steve Holsten is a dance music lover through and through. DJing since the age of 17, he cut his teeth on some equipment he borrowed from a friend, and from that moment on, he was hooked. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Steve never actually went to school for DJing, preferring instead to learn from online resources available through social media and YouTube. These days his music is being picked up by major labels such as Loud Memory and Sony Music. As a forerunner of the new self-taught DJ generation, his career stands as a testament to the value of skill and passion in learning your craft.
Sitting down with him at ADE, it’s clear that Steve is enjoying his time in Amsterdam. He describes the event as “amazing” and joins the chorus of artists expressing their delight at finally connecting face-to-face with the rest of the industry again.
Getting down to business, we asked what we could expect from his latest project.
“I’ve got a project out. My new track, New Chapter. It’s out on loud memory… It’s got 100’000 streams.”
Those certainly aren’t small numbers, but it’s no surprise for a track like this one. “New Chapter” is like a mix between classic house and ambient, blending dance-worth beats with a sound like no other, contrasting moments of high energy with an almost contemplative soundscape. All in all, it’s well worth checking out!
“It’s crazy, all the people that listened to the track. Thank you for that!”
In terms of inspiration, Holsten cites John Summit as a significant influence on his work. Summit’s tech-driven house style has captured a broad audience, and it’s clear how Holsten’s sound fulfills a similar appeal. Seeing both Summit and Holsten at ADE together was an absolute dream come true for fans of this style.
From playing Tomorrowland over the summer to this appearance at ADE, Steve Holsten’s career is on the up and up, and for his growing fan base, that can only be good news. For us here at Nexus Radio, it’s always exciting to see an interesting new artist gaining traction, and we can’t wait to see where he’ll go next.
