Mako: A Gamers Love

THE TAKE 5 SERIES

Best known for 2018 single “Rise,” a collaboration with fellow artists The Glitch Mob and The World Alive, Mako is an American DJ with millions of monthly listeners across streaming platforms. What started off as a duo has turned into a solo musician with an audience both on the dance floor and in the gaming community.

Mako was enlisted by popular online game League of Legends to create a theme song for their annual championship––hence, “Rise” was born. This isn’t the only track the artist has worked on for the game: in 2016, Mako released a remix of “Piercing Light,” a previous championship theme song. In 2019, the artist helped with production of theme song “Awaken.”

This year, Mako is rolling out music for his sophomore album, Fable. “Ocelot” is his most recent release, a single for the album. Fable will be the successor to his very first studio album, Hourglass (2016).

Hourglass was released with Ultra Records, but Mako has released with a couple of other household labels, including Dutch label Spinnin’ Records for his first label release “Into the Light” (2013). The single sat at top 5 on the Beatport Top 100 chart for over two weeks.

Q: Before we dig in, tell us about your latest project.

So my new record is almost here! Its called Fable 🙂 being completely sincere, this ranks up there with one of my proudest releases under Mako. Personally, I think I’m finally showing some flashes of my own sound with this record, which is something I’ve wanted to feel for years. But yeah, it’s a true swirling album of music that accounts for my life so far in classical, film scoring, electronic, and pop music.

Q: What’s the go-to dish you’ve cooked up during the pandemic? (if your willing to share, please include the recipe) OR if you haven’t cooked- What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten?

No lie, I’ve actually started my cooking quest during COVID, never used to give it a go.  I got real romanced by everything bbq, smoking all kinds of things is my latest jam.

Q: What’s the last song you listened to that’s not yours?

Olafur Arnalds just released a new record, I’ve been playing that one out.

Q: If you could know the absolute and total truth to one question, what question would you ask?

Where are my car keys?

Q: What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done and would you do it again?

Let’s see…I guess there’s a difference between the craziest thing I remember doing and anything I don’t :).  Oh, I traveled to Saudia Arabia last year, and then spent some time in Istanbul afterward.  Fucking fascinating parts of the world (very different between each other as well).  Would absolutely do it again

Q: If you could choose any two famous people to have dinner with who would they be?

Bring me Genghis Khan and Winston Churchill I feel like that would be a fire affair

Q: If aliens landed on earth tomorrow and offered to take you home with them, would you go?

I wouldn’t actually. I always think about that when it’s like, “hey we’re gonna send you to Mars, but this might be it for ya”. I’m all set, I have A/C and stuff.

Q: What’s the first show that blew your mind?

The first first was seeing the high school orchestra in San Diego play Dvorak Cello Concerto and Scheherazade….i was fucking sollllld on a one-way ticket to a life in music after that.

Q: Do you sing in the shower? What track do you sing that your fans won’t guess?

Oh yeah for sure. Right now I’m on a Christmas carol kick, weirdly.

Q: And finally, what’s on your Netflix watch list?

Knocked out Bly Manor in time for Halloween. This isn’t Netflix but I’m onto Succession, just started it.
