For us at Nexus Radio, Amsterdam Dance Event wouldn’t have been complete without a chat with the excellent Terri B. A vocalist, Songwriter, DJ, and musical sensation, Terri B sat with us at the Audionamix popup studio in the Nexus Lounge, Amsterdam, to share her thoughts on music and creativity.

Now, it’s no secret that Terri B is a beloved artist, both among fans and within the industry. Over two decades as a professional musician, she has distinguished herself through her iconic vocals and fantastic sound. Over the years, she’s worked with countless other artists, including David Guetta, Roger Sanchez, Laidback Luke, and many, many more. Her sound has only grown more creative and interesting in that time.

Terri strives to clarify the value of bringing creativity to every project and what it means to rework something old into something new. In her own words:

“Sampling is art. It’s not copying, it’s not giving credit - if you do it properly you always credit the original creator’s master and copyright - but it’s art… It’s interesting, it makes things more unique, and it’s not exactly saying ‘we’re just copying everything’. It’s really a good use of an iconic record.”

Of course, finding original ways to take reshape a piece of music isn’t always as easy as it sounds. After all, everyone has to take their inspiration from somewhere, and Terri has some useful advice on how to do this. She stresses the need to look backward rather than simply reacting to contemporaries. “Be creative,” she says, “look into Jazz, go outside your genre… These are the places you find great music.”

Moving on to discussing her current projects, Terri has quite a list of ongoing endeavors. From the Terri Green soul project to her latest releases with both Spinnin’ Records and Kontor Records, she says she’s bringing in at least two to three hundred-thousand streams a month. Right now, she’s working on “an Urban Record for the US” but says she will also continue to do “soul for the house.”

“House is freedom for my head. I don’t do it anymore just to do records. I did that in the beginning… Now I really do the record I want.”
