Troye Sivan and Carly Rae Jepsen Wrote Songs Together

It seems that Troye Sivan and Carly Rae Jepsen sat down to collaborate while Sivan was working on his new album! The “MY MY MY!” singer told Popbuzz: “For this album, we wrote and it just never, like…sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. We wrote a really cute song…you end up writing 50 songs for an album when you wanna pick 10 so sometimes they just don’t make it.”

So while it’s yet unclear whether any songs they worked on together actually made it onto the album, we can always hope for a leaked single!

Sivan also spoke to the Guardian recently about being an openly gay pop star and how he tries to portray that in his music. “I wanted to make the song sound gay, down to the production, by paying homage to a certain clap sound in an old Madonna song,” he explained about “MY MY MY!” “Also, in the video there are shirtless guys, but they’re not touching each other – I didn’t want anybody to be like, ‘This video makes me uncomfortable because it’s gay.’ But at the same time it’s sooooo gay.”

“It’s a confidence and an attitude that I really wanted to explore,” Sivan continued. “It’s that feeling where you go out with your friends and you can feel that sense of community when a bunch of people who have probably been through some rough times come together and are enjoying moving however they want to move, and being whoever they want to be. I wanted to explore that more so than actual sexuality.”

He likes that he gets to live his life openly and truthfully, and that there’s power in doing so while being gay. Two months after signing onto a record label, he posted a video on YouTube entitled “Coming Out.” “It was a very conscious decision I made to get it out of the way,” Sivan said of the video. “I was really scared of being outed. I was getting close to turning 18 and I wanted to be able to go to gay clubs, so I was scared that people were going to see me and the label would find out that way. It was about me taking back that control.”
