David Guetta has hit a new milestone: his music has been streamed over two billion times on Spotify. As Ihouseu puts it: “Guetta, who follows Eminem and Ed Sheeran into the history books, has helped to pave the way for dance music becoming a defining part of contemporary music culture across the world.”
According to the BBC, Guetta was already the most followed artist on Spotify, with more than 6.8 million fans, but reaching this benchmark has further solidified Guetta’s position as one of the most influential EDM artists out there. Bart Cools of Warner Music Group says, “He is the first DJ to reach this milestone which is an amazing achievement but looking at how dance is exploding at the moment as a genre, I hope he will be followed by others very soon.”
His 2014 album, Listen, really pushed his numbers up, with the track “Bad” alone contributing 200 million plays, says the BBC. He’s also been helped along by a more recent release: “Hey Mama” featuring Nicki Minaj and Afrojack has racked up 95 million streams globally since its release this past March.
Guetta said of the achievement: “I want to thank you so much for helping me reach this incredible milestone, 2 billion streams on Spotify! Wow, mind-blowing!”
