The Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) is back in full swing for 2023, and it’s making waves in the world of electronic music and art with its groundbreaking collaboration with the Rijksmuseum. This year’s ADE is set to kick off in a truly unique way with the special opening event titled “Breathe, Walk, Die,” featuring DJ upsammy. This remarkable performance, set to take place on Wednesday, October 18 at 7:30 PM, will be held in the iconic bicycle passage beneath the Rijksmuseum. “Breathe, Walk, Die” is a three-act theatrical performance that brings the exhibition Museum Boijmans van Beuningen at Rijksmuseum to life. DJ upsammy, under the creative direction of Tom Trago, composed a musical tour for the exhibition that reflects the journey of life from birth to death. Themes such as fear, lust, and ambition are explored through music, with live sounds provided by percussionist Valentina Magaletti and a visual interpretation by designer Theun Mosk. The result is a performance that promises to be both emotionally resonant and visually captivating.

This collaboration between ADE and the Rijksmuseum represents a significant step forward for both institutions, as it brings together different art disciplines to create a unique and connecting experience. It also highlights ADE’s evolving identity as a platform that encourages young musical talent on a broader stage while emphasizing the cultural value of electronic music.

Jan-Willem van de Ven, Director of ADE, expressed pride in this initiative, saying, “We are extremely proud that we have been able to set up this initiative in collaboration with the Rijksmuseum, and present electronic music’s positive impact and contribution to cultural heritage to an even wider audience.” Hendrikje Crebolder, Director of Development and Media at the Rijksmuseum, added, “Thanks to our partnership with ADE and Heineken, we can offer a new audience a unique experience in the museum and beyond.”

This collaboration serves as a testament to the growing recognition of electronic music as a legitimate and influential cultural force. It showcases how music and art can come together to create something that transcends traditional boundaries and offers audiences a profound and immersive experience.

ADE continues to grow and evolve, attracting thousands of artists and visitors from around the globe. With its extensive conference programming, arts and culture offerings, and an array of live music and DJ performances, ADE truly encompasses every facet of electronic music culture.
