We met Tim Hox—DJ and founder of the music label “hey, gimme that aux”—at the Nexus Lounge Amsterdam during ADE earlier this year. The producer and self-described “music scientist” shared his experience at ADE 2024, gave some valuable advice to up-and-coming DJs, and answered a round of rapid-fire questions for our Nexus Take 5 Series.
Tim Hox is a multi-talented artist who has made a significant impact on the electronic music scene with his innovative approach, particularly through his creation of “Hox House” in 2019. This unique genre blend of house music quickly caught the attention of listeners and industry professionals alike. He reintroduced himself to the EDM world with his debut EP, The Hox Program, which laid the groundwork for his rapidly growing presence. Later that year, Tim Hox capped off his success with a release on Gemstone, a sub-label of Revealed Recordings, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey within the scene.
Since these beginnings, Tim Hox has released dozens of tracks that have topped charts and garnered him millions of streams across social media and streaming platforms. His most recent single, “Saltare”, is a frenetic Hox House track that tops off a year of exciting and successful releases.
Getting into our interview, Tim Hox shares that he’s excited to be in Amsterdam and back at this iconic music festival, adding that he’s especially looking forward to his “hey, gimme that aux” set presented by Storylines and featuring an incredible B2B lineup.
When it comes to new music, fans of Tim Hox won’t be waiting long—his upcoming EP, Hox House, is set for release in January and promises a lean into house and UK sound. This EP, like much of Tim Hox’s recent projects, will be released via his own label.
Curious to know how his experience releasing music has changed now that he’s self-releasing, we ask Tim Hox if he has any insight to share about this shift. “The best insight is that I’m so creatively free right now,” he says, “I thought ‘Why haven’t I done this before?’ I’ve never felt so free to create what I want instead of making tracks for those labels.”
We also asked Tim Hox if he had any other advice to give to young artists and up-and-comers in the industry. Here’s what he had to say:
“Do what you love. And try not to put so much pressure on yourself when looking at the statistics. If you focus on going viral too much, you can get a sort of toxic mindset. It’s about creating a community and creating an audience for yourself. So just stay consistent—I’d rather have 100 videos with 10k likes, than one video with 100k likes.”
