10 Questions with “Ohiboki” Artist Ankhoï

THE 10 Qs SERIES

As a rising talent in the music industry, Ankhoï has spent the last few years exploring his musical range through genres as diverse as Melodic Techno, Afro, and Progressive House. With a handful of hot remixes – such as his 2023 remix of Keinemusik’s “Before The Flood” and his recent take on Mayra Andrade’s Afeto – he’s more than shown his talent when it comes to reworking and reimagining songs while also having his own fair share of original works.

His journey as an artist started young, when, at just twelve years old, he learned to play the guitar and the djembe – a type of African drum. Even then he was eager to explore his own creativity in a collaborative space and began to play in folk groups along with friends of his until, a few years later, he found his way into the electronic music scene.

His first release – the single Vertigo – came all the way back in 2020 and since then he’s been consistently working on music that pushes the boundaries of expectation for modern progressive dance. As an artist his explorative approach has helped him to define a style that feels broad in both its scope and inspirations.

With an ever-growing international audience of fans, there’s a real excitement about the potential for his future projects and collaborations.

Q: Before we dig in, what's next for you? (Please talk about current projects here+)

Keep having fun in the studio and on stage, just like I’m doing now. I’ve been experimenting with new tracks in my last shows, and I’m happy about the results. So, I think I’ll release another 2 or 3 songs this year when the timing is right. I also have some exciting events coming up, particularly DHB in Ascona, Switzerland, which I’m looking forward to.

Q: What are your thoughts on the meaning of success, and how do you define success for yourself?

I don’t think it has to do with numbers or awards or anything like that. Success, for me, is about continually evolving and perfecting your craft and managing to reach new heights with every new release or show. It’s also about maintaining the same passion, humility, and admiration you had on the first day. As for myself, I will be very proud if I can in any way shine a light in Morocco through my work.

Q: What's the most ridiculous thing you've ever bought?

Travel Pillow, I don’t know how to use this thing and I keep buying it.

Q: What's the most memorable fan encounter you've ever had?

Last summer, a guy came up to me, asked for a pic, and then wanted to know who I was so he could tag me 😊

Q: Where and when would you go if you could travel back in time to any moment in history?

I know that beginnings can be tough for artists, so I would go see all my favourite ones in their early careers and tell them: “I’m coming from the future, and you are a legend”.

Q: If you could only listen to three songs for the rest of your life, which ones would you choose?

Daft Punk – Veridis Quo
Hans Zimmer – Cornfield Chase
Hoba Hoba Spirit – Gnawa Blues

Q: What is your philosophy on happiness, and how do you strive to maintain a sense of happiness and well-being?

Being surrounded by the people I love and witnessing them achieve their dreams brings me much happiness. Now that I have the chance to choose my work rhythm, I always make sure to have enough time to spend with my family and friends.

Q: How do you see dance music evolving in the future?

New artists and producers popping out and larger dance shows happening worldwide. I also feel that music is slowly regaining its place at the center of attention. When it comes to trends, they’re often cyclic, so they don’t hold much significance. Yet, I believe there’s immense creative potential and exploration to be found within the spaces between genres, possibly leading to the emergence of entirely new genres.

Q: If you could switch lives with any other celebrity for a week, who would it be?

Elon Musk, I need to understand how his brain works.

Q: What's the weirdest thing you've ever Googled?

How to cook Pasta in 2min
