The answer is NO, but If you think “The Girl Is Mine” by 99 souls sounds familiar, that’s because it is. Columbia records just released a one-of-a-kind track for public consumption. The single “The Girl Is Mine” is a mash-up of two well known 90’s acts Destiny’s Child and Brandy with “Girl” and “Boy Is Mine” respectively.
This track also marks the first time (that we know of) of a major releasing a mash-up involving two vocal tracks, from two major artists, from two different labels. According to Nexus Radio’s DJ RONS, this song started as a white label mashup and was then probably picked up by the major because of the massive buzz. “Columbia was able to clear the Destiny’s Child sample and then probably got Brandy to resing her part to create a new master. Even if that isn’t what happened, mashing up two different original vocals is a breath of fresh air from the deluge of sound-alike future house covers and sample records that are polluting clubland. “
Regardless of who approached who with this record, we have to wonder — Is this future of music or was this a onetime deal? We don’t know — but we like it.
