In the bustling atmosphere of the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE), we caught up with Toronto-based DJ and producer Sam Van Horne, who has been a pivotal presence in Toronto’s electronic scene since 2010. Known for his eclectic approach to house music, Sam brings a fresh blend of beats and energy wherever he performs. His passion for music and the community it fosters is both palpable and infectious.
Sam’s connection with ADE goes beyond just another gig. This year marks his fifth or perhaps sixth visit to the renowned festival, a testament to its esteemed place in his calendar. “It’s my fifth or sixth year here,” he shares enthusiastically, signaling his admiration for the event’s vibrant energy. For Sam, Amsterdam offers an unmatched vibe, emphasizing the unity of music and culture: “In Amsterdam, it’s more about the actual vibe of the music, the crowd, and the actual community.”
Having deep roots in both Toronto and Amsterdam’s club culture, Sam is uniquely positioned to bridge these worlds with initiatives like ‘Techno Without Borders.’ Founded during COVID-19 by Saad Ayyub, it began as a virtual endeavor, evolving into a global movement aligning North American and European electronic music scenes. “We’re continuing to grow this across the world,” Sam proudly states about their mission to extend Amsterdam’s electric atmosphere to cities throughout Canada.
Sam’s excitement was palpable as he described recent projects, notably an official remix of CeCe Peniston’s track “Are You Ready?” Collaborating with talents like MC Flipside, Sam reveals his ambition to redefine soundscapes, turning everyday sounds into extraordinary audio experiences—a burp transformed into a sonic roar being one quirky highlight.
Beyond the decks, Sam reflects on his love for Amsterdam's lesser-tread locales: "Amsterdam North is a vibe...away from tourist areas, it offers a glimpse into authentic local life," showcasing his deep appreciation for the city's hidden charms.
As the conversation winds down, Sam leaves listeners with a powerful sentiment, hoping his music invokes an irresistible urge to move. “I want them to feel like they can’t not move,” he says, underscoring a commitment to crafting memorable and dynamic auditory experiences.
