Eurovision 2022: Could LUM!X and Pia Maria be Austria’s Wildcard?

The Eurovision song contest is just around the corner, and the acts are already making their way to Turin, Italy, to compete in the world’s biggest song contest. Artists from seventeen different countries will gather together to share their songwriting prowess and fight for the top spot on the international stage, and fans couldn’t be more excited to see what each act will bring to the table.

LUMX and Pia Maria
However, fans aren’t the only ones keeping their eyes peeled for the prospects in this year’s competition. The bookmakers are already releasing their predictions for this year’s winner. The clear favorite is Ukraine, with Italy, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, taking the second, third, and fourth spots.
Aside from just how fantastic Kalush Orchestra’s “Stefania” is, it’s unsurprising that Ukraine is looking like the leads. After all, Eurovision voting has often been influenced by international political sentiments. There is an intense desire across Europe to show support for the country during its current fight against Russian occupation.
What Makes “Halo” So Special? To win Eurovision, a song needs to do a few different things. First, it needs to be a hit – a major hit. We’re not talking about your average club number or even the kind of track that can compete with festival energy.  No, a Eurovision winner has to do more than that. It has to show a new side of music. It has to be innovative and exciting, and, most importantly, it has to capture the attention of voters across all seventeen nations.
With that in mind, “Halo” might be what Eurovision 2022 is looking for. It’s got a modern EDM sound with a hip-hop influence. Its lyrics strike a strong feminist message, while Pia Maria’s vocals bring a kind of passion and energy that is hard to ignore. The beat also feels fresh. With years of music under his belt, LUM!X has now well and indeed graduated to the kind of sound so many young artists aspire to.
Now it’s no secret that we at Nexus Radio love EDM. We’re not alone in that, either. EDM is one of the most popular modern genres of music in the world, and its fanbase is only growing. This brings us to the crux of why we think LUM!X and Pia Maria will be such a force at this year’s competition. Put: they might be Austrian candidates on paper, but these two are the EDM candidate as far as we’re concerned.
That’s not to say other candidates aren’t bringing some EDM energy. The Polish entry, “River” by Ochman, certainly has some of the vibes we love to hear, but if you’re looking for something that’s EDM down to the bone, then Austria is the candidate for you.
What to Expect From Eurovision We obviously can’t say whether the voting will favor the bookies or us. But, after all, they have statistics and data on their side, while we can only speak for a love of the music. No matter who takes the top spot, this year’s competition will still be a fantastic night of music. Eurovision, after all, represents a chance for cultural exchange and the opportunity to find new music from unfamiliar voices.
So whoever you’re rooting for in Eurovision 2022, we hope you enjoy all the acts for their unique contribution to the international music world.
