During the Amsterdam Dance Event, we caught up with Mike Milk of Milk & Sugar at the Nexus Lounge. The DJ and producer joined us for a conversation. He filled us in on his recent projects—including the opportunity to play with a fifty-piece orchestra—and played a round of our Nexus Take 5 series.
Milk & Sugar has been a pioneering force in the vocal house scene, leading the charge from Germany since the early aughts. Their breakout hit, “Let The Sun Shine,” was released in 2003, soaring to the top of the Billboard dance chart and becoming an anthem in clubs around the world. With a string of other successful releases, including “Higher & Higher” and collaborations with renowned artists, MILK & SUGAR has solidified their reputation as one of the most influential duos in the genre.
In the last decade, Milk & Sugar has become a mainstay on the global DJ circuit, performing at prestigious venues like Ibiza’s Pacha, Space, and Amnesia, as well as Green Valley in Brazil and Ellui in South Korea. As DJs, producers, and label owners, they have won numerous accolades, including the German and Italian DJ Awards, and continue to captivate audiences with their unique house sound.
Through their label, Milk & Sugar Recordings, and a series of highly popular compilation releases, they have maintained a steady stream of fresh hits that keep dance floors moving. Last month’s release, House Nation Ibiza 2024, is the most recent installment of an annual compilation album that aims to take a snapshot of the Ibizan house scene.
In our interview, Mike shares that he’s excited to be back in Amsterdam and is making a concerted effort to enjoy the city's beauty: “This year, I’m not taking any cabs or Ubers unless I’m really last minute. I’m taking the tram and, at night, I’ve been walking the canals more.”
It’s been a banner year for Milk & Sugar, not least because they’ve been touring their Ibiza Symphonica show featuring the Münchner Symphoniker, a fifty-piece live orchestra. Thia project has been a long time coming, Mike tells us, adding “I started seven or eight years ago with the idea of doing this, and it was quite complicated getting the money together to record a fifty-piece orchestra.” Still, the series has been an incredible success, bringing house classics into a new context for a new audience.
Before he heads out, we make sure to have Mike play a quick round of Nexus Take 5 Series—where we ask our guests five rapid-fire questions that range from funny or serious to just plain odd. Some of his answers included his go-to karaoke track and his advice to up-and-coming musicians, but we’ll let you discover all of this and more in the exclusive and full-length interview linked below.
