Madonna is once again proving why she remains one of pop culture’s most influential and unpredictable forces. The Queen of Pop has released Confessions II — The Film, a visually ambitious 13-minute short film that serves as both a preview of her upcoming album and a tantalizing glimpse into what could be the next chapter of her long-awaited biopic.
The cinematic teaser accompanies the first six tracks from Confessions II, Madonna’s forthcoming sequel to her landmark 2005 album Confessions on a Dance Floor. Directed by acclaimed creative duo Torso, known for their work with Charli XCX, the film blends music, fashion, surreal imagery, and celebrity appearances into a bold statement that celebrates Madonna’s legacy while looking firmly toward the future.
One of the film’s most talked-about moments comes when Madonna appears to transform into actress Julia Garner, who has long been attached to portray the singer in her upcoming self-directed biographical film. In a striking sequence set inside a dark rave, Madonna navigates through a sea of dancers before Garner suddenly emerges, sporting platinum blonde hair and bold red lipstick reminiscent of Madonna’s early 1980s image. The symbolic handoff immediately sparked renewed excitement about the status of the long-anticipated biopic.
The collaboration is far from the first connection between Madonna and Garner. The Emmy-winning actress previously joined Madonna on stage during the Celebration Tour and was recently seen filming scenes alongside the pop icon for the upcoming season of The Studio. Their continued creative partnership has only intensified speculation that the biopic may finally be gaining momentum.
Adding to the excitement is an impressive roster of celebrity cameos. The film features appearances from Benedict Cumberbatch, Cole Palmer, Kate Moss, Honey Dijon, Arca, Shygirl, Richard E. Grant, Gwendoline Christie, longtime friend Debi Mazar, Madonna’s daughter Lourdes Leon, and lead single collaborator Sabrina Carpenter, among others.
The film may also offer clues about additional casting for Madonna’s biopic. Actress Odessa A’zion appears prominently in a nightclub sequence that many fans believe references New York’s legendary Danceteria club, a pivotal location in Madonna’s early career. The scene has fueled speculation that A’zion could portray someone significant from Madonna’s formative years.
Beyond the celebrity cameos, Confessions II — The Film is packed with symbolism and references to Madonna’s career. Viewers follow her through a series of dreamlike scenarios, including a frantic drive through city traffic that ends in a dramatic collision, leaving behind nothing but a lipstick mark on the deployed airbag. Another sequence finds her pursued by masked camerawomen before she is transported to an otherworldly forest illuminated by neon green lasers.
Longtime fans will appreciate the numerous Easter eggs hidden throughout the film. One scene recreates Madonna handing a demo tape to a stranger, echoing the real-life moment she famously gave her music to influential New York DJ Mark Kamins. Another nod references her iconic “Deeper and Deeper” era, while Lourdes Leon delivers one of the film’s most memorable moments by calling for the cameras to “cut” as the story reaches its conclusion.
The release also shines a spotlight on Madonna’s ongoing efforts to bring her life story to the big screen. Originally announced with Universal Pictures and producer Amy Pascal attached, the project has undergone multiple revisions over the years. Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody worked on an early draft before stepping away, with Erin Cressida Wilson later joining the project.
Madonna has previously described the film as an exploration of her struggle to succeed as a female artist in a male-dominated industry. She has said the story will capture the highs and lows of her extraordinary journey, from arriving in New York City with little more than ambition to becoming one of the best-selling and most influential artists in music history.
Musically, Confessions II marks Madonna’s first full-length studio album since 2019’s Madame X, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The project has already generated significant buzz thanks to preview tracks including “I Feel So Free,” “Love Sensation,” and the Sabrina Carpenter collaboration “Bring Your Love.” The latter became Madonna’s first lead album single to enter the Billboard Hot 100 since 2012.
With Confessions II — The Film, Madonna once again demonstrates her ability to blend music, fashion, film, and cultural commentary into a singular artistic vision. Whether viewed as an album teaser, a visual love letter to her career, or a cryptic preview of her biopic ambitions, the film confirms that Madonna remains committed to reinventing herself—and keeping audiences guessing about what comes next.
