Martin Garrix Tops DJ Mag Top 100 and Celebrated it with a Legendary Performance

Already a ritual, every year around these dates comes hand in hand with one of the most anticipated moments in the world of electronic music, whether by fans or even haters, of the long-awaited—and contentious—award of the Top 100 DJs of the British magazine DJ Mag 2022! The ranking determines the most popular DJs through public voting, which received 1.3 million votes this year from the 234 countries participating in the campaign.
DJ Mag Top 100
We’ve all heard that Martin Garrix is the top DJ in this year’s DJ Mag Top 100, but we’re here for the details. So get your reading glasses and read on!

The World's No. 1 DJ in 2022

Martin Garrix has been named The World’s No. 1 DJ in this year’s DJ Mag Top 100 DJs poll, taking back the highest position from his great friend and mentor David Guetta, who had held the position for the past two years. The phenomenal young Dutchman, still only 26, burst onto the scene in his mid-teens with his proto-EDM tune ‘Animals,’ and went on to win the Top 100 DJs title in 2016, 2017, and 2018. Garrix’s achievement is all the more impressive given that he is still in his twenties, having already collaborated with Dua Lipa, Usher, Bono, and The Edge from U2, as well as showcasing his productions and those from his label STMPD RCRDS at festivals and clubs all over the world.

Martin Garrix Made History

The Dutch DJ and producer celebrated his fourth win with a historic performance, becoming the first artist to DJ from the iconic Empire State Building in New York City as the crown jewel of a reimagined Top 100 DJs Awards Show broadcast. “It was surreal,” he said of the set. “It’s one of the most iconic buildings in the world, so being on top playing my music was very special. Music has brought me to many crazy places, but this was definitely high up there.”

"It was surreal," he said of the set. "It's one of the most iconic buildings in the world, so being on top playing my music was very special. Music has brought me to many crazy places, but this was definitely high up there."

The Empire State Building has appeared in over 250 films and television shows, including King Kong—shortly after its completion in 1933—and a slew of classic US action/adventure films. Eminem, Ed Sheeran, and Elton John have performed on top of it, but no DJ has ever been permitted to twist there—until now.

Martin Garrix is beyond grateful for his fans who took the time to vote. “Being back at number 1 again feels very surreal, and I’ll never ever take your support for granted. Thank you.”

Other DJs Who Made it to the Top

The top ten DJs are the same as in 2021, with Timmy Trumpet moving up one spot while still being Australasia’s highest DJ and Don Diablo claiming the Highest Future House DJ award despite falling two spots. The ever-consistent Afrojack remains at No.6, and Oliver Heldens stays in the top ten despite falling two spots. Half of the top ten are Dutch, demonstrating the country’s dominance on the global EDM scene.
Vintage Culture, the Brazilian house music party starter, is at the door at No.11, up an impressive six places, making him The World’s No.1 House DJ, while Charlotte de Witte, the World’s No.1 Techno DJ, has risen nine places to No.14 and must surely be a strong candidate to break the iron grip that male DJs have had on the top 10 places in recent years. Also among the top 20, Calvin Harris, Tiësto, and Fedde Le Grand are all non-movers, while Alan Walker returns to the top 20 at No.17, up five spots. Nicky Romero has also come back to the top 20 for the first time in several years, climbing six places.
