MKX Isn’t Chasing Trends—He’s Creating the Next Era of Pop

MKX is an artist who has never been afraid to blur the lines between nostalgia and innovation. Drawing inspiration from the golden era of late-’90s and early-2000s pop while giving it a fresh electronic edge, he’s created a sound that feels both familiar and forward-thinking.

Speaking with Nexus Radio, MKX shared what he’s been working on, what fans can expect next, and why this year’s Pride season is especially meaningful. With performances lined up at Dreamland and Toronto Pride, he’s looking forward to much more than just stepping on stage.

"It's about putting everything into the performance," he says. "But it's also about the atmosphere. Everyone is dressed up, expressing themselves, and celebrating who they are. Being part of that energy is something really special."

Since his last conversation with Nexus Radio, MKX has been busy developing a new chapter in his music. While his signature pop sound remains at the core, his upcoming releases explore a darker, grittier electronic direction with a more sensual feel.

"It's not a complete switch," he explains. "I'm just bringing new elements into what I already do. I still want it to feel like me."

One topic that naturally came up was the ongoing Y2K revival, something that fits perfectly with MKX’s artistic identity. He’s excited to see a new generation embracing the music, fashion, and culture that shaped his biggest influences.

"I'm so happy that my favorite era of pop music is being celebrated again," he says. "It's not just people who grew up with it anymore. Younger generations are discovering it too, and they're really embracing the style and the energy."

That love for nostalgia runs deep in his production. MKX pays close attention to the smallest details, creating what he describes as “ear candy”—tiny sounds and textures that make listeners want to come back for another listen. Inspired by groundbreaking producers like Sophie, he even incorporates sounds from childhood gadgets into his music. One subtle rhythm heard in his tracks comes from the spinning disc mechanism of the boombox he grew up with.

As the conversation wrapped up, MKX reflected on how much he’s grown as both an artist and a person. More than anything, he hopes his music encourages people to embrace who they are without apology.

MKX’s latest single, “Make You Dance,” is out now on all major streaming platforms. To hear more about his creative process, new music, and what’s coming next, be sure to listen to the full interview with Radio Sio on Nexus Radio.
