Reeling: The Chicago LGBTQ+ International Film Festival has offered a first look at its 2025 program with the announcement of this year’s Opening Night and Centerpiece films. The 43rd edition of the festival will run in person from September 19–28, 2025, with screenings at Landmark Century Centre Cinemas (2828 N. Clark St.) and additional venues across the city.
On September 19, Reeling makes history by kicking off with its first-ever animated Opening Night feature. Lesbian Space Princess, directed by Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese, blasts off with candy-colored visuals, catchy pop songs, and unapologetic sapphic humor. The film follows introverted princess Saria, who finally ventures outside her room to rescue her kidnapped girlfriend, Kiki—turning cosmic adventure into a queer, musical joyride.
The Narrative Centerpiece on Thursday, September 25 brings the festival’s biting humor to the forefront. First-time director Siobhan McCarthy’s She’s the He, a breakout hit at SXSW, takes the gender-swap comedy trope and flips it on its head. The satire follows two best friends posing as trans girls during their final week of high school. What starts as a prank quickly snowballs, reshaping their friendship and graduation plans. With an almost entirely queer, trans, and nonbinary cast and crew, the film blends sharp comedy with sincere coming-of-age storytelling.
On September 21, the Documentary Centerpiece It’s Dorothy! explores over a century of Oz history through the women who brought Dorothy Gale to life. From Judy Garland’s legendary performance to Shanice Shantay’s modern interpretation, director Jeffrey McHale highlights Dorothy as a cultural symbol for marginalized voices. Featuring insights from John Waters, Lena Waithe, and Rufus Wainwright, the film remixes archival footage and cinematic art to celebrate a timeless queer icon.
