Hungarian designer Tamás Borján, better known by his alias Tomasso Builds, has made a name for himself in the LEGO community with his intricate and realistic replicas of DJ equipment. His latest project, a LEGO version of the iconic Technics SL-1200 MK2 turntable, has been submitted to LEGO’s Ideas platform, where it awaits the necessary 10,000 votes to be considered for production as an official LEGO set.
Borján’s past successes include the LEGO Pioneer CDJ 2000s, and now he’s aiming to capture the essence of the Technics SL-1200 MK2 with his new creation. The proposed set comprises approximately 2,215 pieces and is designed to closely mimic the original turntable’s functionality and aesthetic. Among its standout features are a built-in motor to drive the turntable, working start and stop buttons, a tonearm with an adjustable balance weight, and an anti-skating knob. The platter is scaled to accommodate a 7″ vinyl record, adding to its authenticity.
“This is arguably the most iconic and recognizable turntable ever made,” Borján wrote on the LEGO Ideas platform. “It would be a cool addition to any DJ’s, music lover’s, or technology enthusiast’s display collection. It is a historical piece that has shaped the world we live in.”
As of now, the project has garnered 95 supporters, a far cry from the 10,000 votes needed for LEGO to consider turning it into an official product. However, given Borján’s track record and the appeal of his designs, there’s optimism within the community that it will reach its goal.
Borján is no stranger to creating LEGO versions of beloved DJ gear. His previous designs include the Pioneer DJM 900 Nexus, the CDJ 2000 Nexus, and the Sennheiser HD25 DJ headphones, all of which have been well-received by both LEGO enthusiasts and the DJ community.
The potential release of the LEGO Technics SL-1200 MK2 could mark another milestone in Borján’s career, blending the worlds of LEGO building and music technology. It also represents a unique opportunity for fans of both LEGO and vinyl culture to celebrate a piece of history in a novel way.
For those interested in supporting this project, the complete list of features and a promotional video can be found on LEGO’s Ideas platform. With enough backing, this meticulously crafted LEGO turntable might soon spin its way into the collections of DJs and LEGO fans alike.
