Unleashing Creativity: The Dynamic Duo of Honey Bea and Lex Azu

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Honey Bea and Lex Azu, two artists who are no strangers to the relentless pace and intense creativity demanded by the music industry during the Nexus Lounge ADE Edition.

Honey Bea, fresh off a two-day sync writing camp, was all smiles as she shared her excitement for the week ahead. “Tonight is going to be the back-to-back Bitbird showcase and the MonsterCat showcase,” Honey Bea revealed, emphasizing the 12-hour musical marathon that lay before them. The anticipation for witnessing artists who primarily tour in the US perform in Europe was palpable.

The conversation shifted seamlessly from events to collaborations, as Honey Bea and Lex Azu discussed their innovative project, Breakfast and Anime. Honey Bea explained their shift from intense future bass tracks to a more laid-back lo-fi style, saying, “It’s really fun for us to figure out this style and not put so much pressure on it.” It’s a fresh, playful venture that allows them to explore new musical territories and have a bit of fun along the way.

Lex Azu chimed in, “Given our instrumental background—playing bass, I play drums—we groove together in this workflow where it just makes sense for us to produce this type of music.” Their musical synergy is apparent, and the name Breakfast and Anime wonderfully encapsulates the vibe they put forth—playful yet meaningful.

As the discussion unfolded, Honey Bea and Lex Azu shared insights into their personal journeys and future aspirations. Honey Bea described the unique challenges and creativity involved in her genre-defining “dream trap” style, where heavier themes are crafted into danceable music. "I like to put these heavier topics in music that still makes you move," she explained—a true testament to her introspective artistry.

Meanwhile, Lex Azu discussed his ambition to bring lively EDM influences to the Amsterdam club scene, outside the confines of major events like ADE. Inspired by giants like Flume and Skrillex, he’s determined to introduce an evolving soundscape to an audience eager for more than just techno.

As the hourglass turned, the subject shifted to the future of the dance scene, with Lex Azu remarking, “It’s ever-evolving. There are people listening to it, so I would go with that.” It was a confident assertion of the vibrant transformations happening within the genre right now—a musical melting pot of sorts.

Towards the end of the interview, both musicians encouraged aspiring artists with timeless advice. Alex urged, “Don’t be so phased by all the AI stuff… there’s definitely still a place for up and coming musicians who are trying to make a difference.”

This dynamic conversation perfectly encapsulated the creative spirit of Honey Bea and Lex Azu. From experimental projects like Breakfast and Anime to their personal growth as artists, their journey is filled with evolving soundscapes and genuine passion. Listen to the full interview below.
