Janieck
We had a chat with Janieck Devy about latest projects, most memorable soundtrack, predicting the future of music, and much more.
Janieck Devy, also known as simply Janieck, is a Dutch singer-songwriter, musician, and actor. He is best known for the 2004 Dutch movie Tow Truck Pluck, where a then 10-years-old Janieck can be seen portraying the main character Pluk.
His acting career didn’t end with Pluk, Janieck went on to play roles in Kruistocht in Spijkerbroek and My Queen Karo. It was on set for those movies that he began to play guitar, as a way to kill time––a bud that would bloom into his music career today.
He made his debut as a singer in 2012 with single “Six String Thing.” A few years later, he would co-write “Reality” with Belgian DJ Lost Frequencies, topping the chart in over 10 countries. The traction would get him signed to Spinnin’ Records in 2016.
In 2019, Janieck released “Narcotic,” a cover of the famous 90s hit by Liquido, with artists Youngotus and Senex. “Narcotic” now boasts over 100 million streams on Spotify and peaked at #2 on Germany’s Radio Airplay Chart.

Q: Before we dig in, what's next for you? (current or future projects)
For my next project I got involved with an organization that invented a machine that can harvest fresh drinking water right out the air. It will be presented at the World Expo in Dubai this year and I wrote the song they will use to spread the word. Read more here: SunGlacier – Glacier builders since 2010
Q: Why did you choose to make dance music?
Honestly, I came from playing in bands and writing mostly singer-songwriter music, but I got asked to write some songs for several DJ’s. At first it was a big transition for me as a songwriter, but I started to love it so much. Finally, people wanted to hear my songs because it wasn’t just guitar and heartfelt stuff Haha. It was easy going (on the surface), and that made me open my eyes and led me to find a hybrid direction for my music I’ve been wanting to make. Bittersweet symphonies I would call it.
Q: Let's create a new festival; What would you name it, Where would it be located, and Who would be the top 3 headliners?
The festival would be called ”Socotra”, on the island of ‘Mallorca’. And the three headliners would be.. Drum ruffle…… 1.Moby 2. Robin Schulz 3. Me, Haha.
Q: What is music going to sound like 20 years from now?
Somehow, I think we will go back in time in a way.. So like 60’s kinda songs but with a heavy electronic bass and beat to it. Maybe… it’s hard because; do we continue progressing in the digital way of making music or will there be a limit? Maybe our ears and brains can’t even process it anymore what our computers are making. There must be some kind of going back to different times…OR just robot beeps, no vocals anymore, just programmed sounds. *bleep* *bleep*
Q: What movie has a very memorable soundtrack?
Pirates of the Caribbean!!!
Q: If you could bring one artist back to life, who would it be? (Why that artist?)
Avicii, he brought Dance Music to a new level, because of him a lot of genres we’re able to merge and become something entirely new. A real pioneer.
Q: What if aliens invade our planet and they're really hot?
Haha. Best interview question ever! I fantasize sometimes about an alien just landing in my garden and I would be the first human for it/him/her to encounter (they have probably been here already tho😛). I would bring them on tour with me and pretend they are just in costume and slowly let people think or believe otherwise, so it’s going to be a massive thing which we can reveal in an awesome show that’s going to shock the world, but in a good way.
Q: If you could spend a day talking to an animal, what animal would you choose and what would you want to learn from them?
An Iguana, they can change their skin for camouflage, HOW!?
Q: What do you think the world will look like in 300 years?
Unfortunately, in my mind it looks as most sci-fi movies depict. Different sectors, A-Z, where ‘A’ has everything and the latter nothing. BUT flying cars will be around and connections with alien life, and a human base on Mars or even further away!
Q: Who would win a fight between Spiderman and Batman (and why?)
Definitely Batman, he can just blow Spiderman up. I love Spiderman though, but he can’t take on the force of whatever Batman has in his arsenal right?
