It’s hard to believe some dance tracks are turning 30 this year! One such timeless gem is Paul van Dyk’s “For An Angel.” Released in 1994, this debut track from the German DJ and producer quickly became a Trance anthem, capturing the pure spirit of the dancefloor. In this piece, we’re diving into the story behind the track that transformed van Dyk’s career and helped shape the sound of an entire genre.
House has Marshall Jefferson’s “Move Your Body,” techno has DJ Rolando’s “Knights Of The Jaguar,” and Trance has Paul van Dyk’s “For An Angel.” While none of these tracks were the very first in their genres, each has become an undeniable anthem, holding iconic status even decades later. “For An Angel” originally appeared on van Dyk’s 45 RPM album on the MFS label, but it wasn’t an instant hit. It was the 1998 “E-Werk Remix”—a nod to the influential Berlin club where van Dyk was a resident—that transformed it into a gold-certified global classic. Topping the UK Dance Chart for weeks, “For An Angel” was etched into trance legend, inspiring countless producers and talents around the world.
Though it often gets grouped with the late-’90s big-room trance boom and brands like Gatecrasher and Cream, “For An Angel” was actually ahead of the curve. Paul van Dyk crafted his unique style, blending the pulsing energy of ’90s progressive techno with soul-stirring melodies long before Trance hit the mainstream. Its success arguably helped propel Trance out of the underground and into the commercial spotlight. And it’s clear why: every part of “For An Angel” is pure euphoria, from the racing drums and surging synths to those Balearic piano chords radiating warmth. It sweeps over you like a wave as airy vocals drift in and out, delivering blissful bursts of pure, sensual release under the strobe lights.
Over the decades, Paul van Dyk has released numerous albums, an array of singles, and multiple *The Politics Of Dancing* mixes. In 2003, he made history as the first artist nominated for a Grammy in the new Best Dance/Electronic Album category, and his talent has also found its way into film soundtracks and video game scores. While each project holds significance for him, none have had quite the same enduring influence on the dance music world as “For An Angel.”
To celebrate its 30th anniversary, “For An Angel” made a comeback with a special double-vinyl release, showcasing the iconic original alongside a collection of fresh remixes.
This special release includes van Dyk’s classic E-Werk Club Mix, along with new remixes from Öwnboss, Julian Jeweil, LOUT, and KOLONIE, plus re-edits by Filo & Peri, Activa, and Miika Kuisma. Released on October 25, 202it’st’s now on van Dyk’s VANDIT Records.
Moreover, Paul van Dyk was recently awarded the Nexus Radio Level Award – Legend of Dance. This esteemed honor recognizes not just his talent as a D.J. and producer but also his commitment to advancing the electronic music scene and expanding its global influence. Van Dyk reflects, “For An Angel is so special to me because it represents an incredible time for dance music and wonderful personal memories.” He believes that even after 30 years, the iconic trance track still has the ability to “touch so many hearts.”
